Weybridge Lodge No. 6787

No account of the history of Noel Money Lodge would be complete without mention of Weybridge Lodge No. 6787.

Noel Money has always identified itself as a ‘Weybridge Lodge’, traditionally drawing its membership from within the local business and social communities. But in days following the end of the Second World War, just like today, many Lodges suffered from the inability of members to take time off from their work to attend meetings — most members of Noel Money were local Weybridge traders, businessmen, shopkeepers and professional men.

Since its formation, the Lodge has always met on a Tuesday but this particular weekday was not always convenient for everyone, especially those with their own businesses to run.

In later years, many came from Vickers Aviation (later British Aerospace) and Hawker Aircraft, two of the biggest employers in the area and since time immemorial, in common with much of Surrey, Wednesday had been the Early Closing Day in Weybridge.

So in the late 1940’s a number of members decided to form a new Lodge which would better suit the needs of local businessmen and traders by meeting on a Wednesday, thus taking advantage of the Early Closing Day each week.

And so on 19th January 1949 Weybridge Lodge No. 6787 was Consecrated as the ‘daughter’ Lodge of Noel Money Lodge; from which was derived a number of the early Masters of the Lodge, notably W. Bro. Roy Edmonds, MBE PGStB, PPGW the ‘Father’ and founder of the Lodge who was at one time Works Manager at Vickers.

Roy was Master of Noel Money Lodge in 1929/30 and served as Director of Ceremonies for 25 years before retiring in 1967. Roy’s son Freddie became the very first Initiate of Weybridge Lodge and Roy went on to be honoured by the MW Grand Master as Grand Standard Bearer in 1957.

He remains to this day one of the most eminent members of both Lodges and each owes a huge debt of gratitude for his service. He was made an Honorary Member of Noel Money in 1968, a month before his death.
